MY STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE
As a capstone requirement to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Music Education, I spent my Senior Student Teaching Experience at Spencer-Van Etten High School in Spencer, NY.
This was one of the best experiences I've had in my music education experience. I spent 8 weeks teaching group lessons for all instrumentalists, rehearsing the Concert Band ensemble daily, offering support in music theory classes, and offering support in playing secondary instruments for Concert Band, Modern Band, and Choir. All the hard work culminated in their spring concert, where I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to showcase our work and make my professional conducting debut on the piece we worked on "Selections from Chicago The Musical."
When I first thought of becoming a Music Educator I was really hoping to someday impact the lives of students much the way my own music teachers have inspired me. Having the opportunity to experience teaching music in real life has continued to inspire me to keep reaching for all my musical goals and dreams. The best part of the experience was teaching two of my 9th grade clarinet players who were ecstatic to learn all about clarinet. As part of a small group lesson, I helped them learn to play and maintain a consistent sound on the instrument. The next day, they eagerly tracked me down and surprised me with their playing! I couldn’t believe the pride I feel for these kids. Hearing them play the 1st few notes of the instrument and putting it together with inspiration and a passion to grow musically has confirmed that music education is the place for me. Why do I want to become a music educator? Inspiration, Passion and Pride. I believe music impacts humanity. Music makes the world better, one note, one instrument, one student at a time.
